Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful 

1. At work, as in life, attractive women get a lot of
2. the breaks. Studies have shown that they are more
3. likely to be promoted than their plain-Jane colleagues.
4. Because people tend to project positive traits onto
5. them, such as sensitivity and poise, they may also
6. be at an advantage in job interviews. But research
7. by two Israelis suggests otherwise.
8. These researchers looked at what happens
9. when job hunters include photos with their curricula
10. vitae (CV), as is the norm in much of Europe and
11. Asia. They sent fictional applications to over 2,500
12. real-life vacancies. For each job they sent two very
13. similar résumés, one with a photo, one without. For
14. men, the results were as expected. Hunks were more
15. likely to be called for an interview if they included a
16. photo. Ugly men were better off not including one.
17. However, for women this was reversed. Attractive
18. females were less likely to be offered an interview if
19. they included their photo.
20. At first they considered that people assume
21. beautiful women to be stupid. However, the photos
22. had also been rated on how intelligent people
23. thought each subject looked; there was no correlation
24. between perceived intellect and physical beauty. So
25. the cause of the discrimination must lie elsewhere.
26. Human Resource (HR) departments tend to be staffed
27. mostly by women. Indeed, 93% of those tasked with
28. selecting whom to invite for an interview were female.
29. The researchers unavoidable – and unpalatable
30. – conclusion is that old-fashioned jealousy led the
31. women to discriminate against pretty candidates.
