3. “You have to distinguish between two things – the
4. Swedish economy and the Swedish stock market. The
5. Swedish economy is the sum of all the goods and
6. services that are produced in this country every day.
7. There are telephones from Eric, cars from Volvo,
8. chickens from Scan, and shipments from Kiruna to
9. Svövke. That’s the Swedish economy, and it’s just as
10. strong or weak today as it was a week ago.”
11. He paused for effect and took a sip of water.
12. “The Stock Exchange is something very different.
13. There is no economy and no production of goods and
14. services. There are only fantasies in which people from
15. one hour to the next decide that this or that company
16. is worth so many billions, more or less. It doesn’t have
17. a thing to do with reality or with the Swedish economy.”
18. “So you’re saying that it doesn’t matter if the Stock
19. Exchange drops like a rock?”
